Spiritual Checkup

December 30, 2008Pastor Nancy No Comments »
Good afternoon friends,
I was cleaning out a desk drawer (in anticipation of moving to the new office some day soon) and found a page from a devotional book entitled “Spiritual Checkup”.  The end of the year seemed like a good time to pass it on to you.  Just like we need physical check-ups, we also need spiritual check-ups.  We can do this by looking at Proverbs 4:20-27.
EARS – (v. 20) Are we hearing God’s Word clearly and with understanding?  Are we doing what those words tell us?
EYES – (vv. 21, 25)  Are we keeping our eyes on the teachings that will guide us toward righteousness?
HEART (v. 23) Are we protecting our heart from evil?
TONGUE (v. 24) Is our mouth clean and pure?
FEET (v. 26) Are we walking straight toward God’s truth without wavering?
How did you do on your spiritual check-up?  What area might you consider working on during 2009?
Here’s the scripture from The Message (below I’ll put the NLT)

Proverbs 4:20-27 (The Message)

Learn It by Heart

20-22 Dear friend, listen well to my words;
tune your ears to my voice.
Keep my message in plain view at all times.
Concentrate! Learn it by heart!
Those who discover these words live, really live;
body and soul, they’re bursting with health.

23-27 Keep vigilant watch over your heart;
that’s where life starts.
Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth;
avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.
Keep your eyes straight ahead;
ignore all sideshow distractions.
Watch your step,
and the road will stretch out smooth before you.
Look neither right nor left;
leave evil in the dust.

New Living Translation (NLT)

Proverbs 4:20-27 (New Living Translation)

20 My child, pay attention to what I say.
Listen carefully to my words.
21 Don’t lose sight of them.
Let them penetrate deep into your heart,
22 for they bring life to those who find them,
and healing to their whole body.

23 Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.

24 Avoid all perverse talk;
stay away from corrupt speech.

25 Look straight ahead,
and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
26 Mark out a straight path for your feet;
stay on the safe path.
27 Don’t get sidetracked;
keep your feet from following evil.

Celebrate the coming of a new year in which we all have the opportunity to serve Jesus and get to know him even better!
