Off your game?

It was one of those “ah-ha” moments.  I was thinking and trying to find a solution.  God was listening in on my thoughts and gave me the missing piece to the puzzle.  The puzzle was one of trying to figure out why I felt like I had been a little “off my game” in recent months.  Nothing was really wrong in my life, and yet I felt like I could be doing better at remembering things and taking care of details.

Like I said, God gave me the missing piece in the puzzle.  He reminded me that I had been neglecting one of the spiritual disciplines that I had been practicing for over 15 years.  When I served at Church of the Lakes as a seminary intern, I began the practice of taking a retreat day each month.  I would go to a retreat center and have a quiet day.  Some days I felt like studying a particular portion of scripture.  Other days I would spend time walking on the grounds of the retreat center and just taking time to be with God.  Some days I would take a book along and do a bit of reading.  I’ve even been known to take a short power nap or do some thinking for an upcoming sermon.  Last winter I decided to change the retreat house I was going to, but I didn’t take the time to schedule it out for the year like I normally would.  Consequently, as happens in all of our lives, life started happening and all of a sudden I didn’t have a whole day to devote to this effort.  I let that spiritual discipline slip in my life and it didn’t just affect my spirit, it affected my free time, my weight loss efforts, my sense of having things in balance.

I want to encourage you to take a look at your life.  Maybe it’s time for you to spend a little more time on the eternal things in this game of Life.  Have you been neglecting the spiritual disciplines – scripture study, prayer, fasting, generosity, meditation, simplicity, solitude, submission, service, confession, worship, guidance, or celebration?  Maybe it’s time to get back to what has worked before – or to explore something new – so that your spiritual balance is back in order which will help put your entire life back into better order.

And here’s a suggestion for the women in this reading audience.  We’re having a women’s retreat on Oct. 17-18.  Because we changed the place, you can still register for the event.  We will be going to a retreat house on Sippo Lake in Perry Township.  It’s close enough to home so that you can spend the night at home in your own bed if you like.  We’ll gather Friday evening between 6 and 6:30 and finish up on Saturday around 4:30.  Our topic for the weekend will be taking a look at the story in Luke 7 of the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears.  No preparation is necessary.  Bring your Bible, wear comfortable clothes, and open your heart to what God might have in store for you.  Do you need a one day getaway to refocus on Jesus and to enjoy some fellowship with other women?  Let me know if you’d like to join us by contacting me at 330-499-8972.  Invite a friend if you like.  The cost will be under $25 and will include snacks on Friday evening, breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

For the men in this reading audience, if you know of a woman who might be blessed by having this break in their busy life, tell them about this opportunity!

May we all work at refocusing our lives to the eternal matters.
